What does the talk entail?
Go beyond the music, colour and crowds to discover the rich history and cultural significance of Notting Hill Carnival. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of the history and cultural significance of Notting Hill Carnival, including its Caribbean influences, historical context and evolution. Rather than simply learning about Carnival as an annual event, teams are invited to explore the people, culture, creativity and stories that have shaped it.
1. The History of Notting Hill Carnival - Explore the story behind Notting Hill Carnival, from its Caribbean roots and the influence of migration and colonial history to its role in resistance, community and cultural expression. Participants will discover how Carnival developed over time and why it continues to hold such significance today.
2. Costume & Mas - Explore the creativity and craftsmanship behind Carnival costumes and mas to learn more about their significance. Participants can also get the opportunity (available with the extended in-person experience) to see selected costume pieces up close, and, where appropriate, handle and try on pieces themselves for a more immersive introduction to Carnival culture.
3. Interactive Q&A and Discussion - There is plenty of opportunity to ask questions, share thoughts and explore what Carnival means today. The discussion encourages participants to consider Carnival not simply as a street party, but as an important expression of culture, identity, creativity, community and history.
