Calligraphy vs Engraving vs Hot Foiling:What's the Difference, and Which One Does Your Event Need?
A quick, no-jargon guide to picking the right personalisation for your next corporate event, product launch or client gift.
Here's a question we get asked almost every week: "So... is it calligraphy, or is it engraving?" Sometimes it's "can you hot foil this?" when what someone actually needs is engraving, or the other way round. Totally understandable - they're all beautiful, bespoke, and finish an item with someone's name or a personal message. But they're three different crafts, done with different tools, on different materials, and each one really shines in a different setting.
If you're planning a product launch, a client dinner, a conference gifting moment or an office social and you're not sure which service to book, this one's for you. We'll walk through what each technique actually is, how it's done, what it's suited to, and why it's become one of our most requested add-ons for corporate events. By the end you'll know exactly what to enquire about.
The Three Techniques, Explained.
1. Live Calligraphy (Pen)
What it is: Our calligrapher hand-writes directly onto an item using pen and ink - think elegant, flowing script added live, in front of your guests.
The process: She will personalises items one by one as guests come to her : a name, initials, a date or a short message, written to order. All our calligrapher needs is a table and a chair.
Best suited to: Anything that's too fragile or unsuitable for a machine or heat process like plastic, card, tote bags, favour boxes, place cards. It's the most versatile of the three.
• Ink can be any colour, so it's easy to match your brand palette
• Ideal for flat or delicate items that engraving or foiling can't touch
2. Engraving
What it is: A permanent design like a name, date, word or small illustration which is etched directly into the surface of an item.
The process: Our calligrapher works the design straight into the material by hand at your event, in the same live, personalised way as the pen calligraphy, just with a permanent result.
Best suited to: Glass and metal work best. Think perfume bottles, champagne flutes, whisky tumblers, hip flasks, pens or keepsake glassware. It's the one to choose when you want the personalisation to last a lifetime, not just look good on the night.
• Permanent - won't fade, rub off or wash away
• Best on glass or metal items
3. Hot Foiling
What it is: A heat technique that presses a thin layer of gold or silver foil into a surface, leaving a crisp, metallic, embossed-look finish.
The process: Using heat rather than ink or a blade, our calligrapher imprints the foil straight onto the item at your event. It's quick, striking, and looks noticeably premium.
Best suited to: Leather goods and notebooks. Think journals, portfolios, luggage tags, card holders or diaries. If you're gifting something that already feels a bit luxe, hot foiling is what makes it feel finished.
• Gold, rose gold or silver foil for a premium, branded finish
• Best on real or faux leather products and notebooks

Why This Works So Well for Corporate Events?
Personalisation is one of the simplest ways to turn a standard corporate touchpoint into something people actually remember and talk about afterwards. It's live, it's interactive, and every guest walks away with something one-of-a-kind that's got their name on it. For events built around clients, launches or your own team, that's a lot of impact for one small table set-up.
A few of the moments our clients typically book this for:
• Product launches — engrave or foil branded merchandise as a takeaway guests will actually keep
• Client entertainment & VIP dinners — personalise glassware or menus tableside as guests arrive
• Conferences & brand activations — a live, watchable moment that draws a crowd to your stand
• Office parties & team socials — a relaxed, sociable activity that doubles as a apriciation gift
• Corporate gifting & awards evenings — engraved trophies, foiled notebooks or personalised hampers that feel considered, not generic
• Christmas parties — hot foiled diaries or even engraved decorations as a festive, useful takeaway
It also works brilliantly as an add-on rather than the main event, pair it with one of our other in-person experiences, or simply have it running quietly in the corner of a party as a personalised parting gift station.
